Careers Service

The IMT School’s Guidance and Placement services aim to encourage a quick and smooth post-doctoral transition to academia, institutions, companies and entrepreneurial sectors that valorize the PhD degrees earned by the School’s students.

There are multiple tools that are used by the School to support job placement activities in a variety of contexts.

Career Consultancy

Individual paths

Students, alumni, post-docs, and researchers can contact the Careers Service to activate individual supports (career counseling, coaching, skills assessment, motivational interviews) for:
- identify professional development goals, intermediate steps and resources to achieve them
- increase strengths and optimize critical points, enhance skills
- develop action plans for educational and professional success
- manage active job search independently and in a targeted manner
- have knowledge of the local, national and international job market
- review CVs and cover letters, prepare for job interviews - successful applications
With the aim of developing strategies to valorize the doctoral journey in view of a satisfactory professional path, interested students, alumni and alumnae can arrange an appointment online or in person with the School's career consultant , Dr. Ornella Bucci (Skype: ornella-bucci)


Friday Free Talks
Students, alumni, post-docs, and researchers can take advantage of the in-person "Friday Free Talks" help desk where they can individually and confidentially delve into topics relevant to their training and professional career.
It is not about therapy but about spaces and moments for:
- collect information in general about the IMT School
- talk about factors that influence the doctoral "journey" (research project, interpersonal relationships, tools, resources, obstacles, time management, public presentations, etc.)
- ask for motivational support in order to successfully face challenges
- evaluate your skills and put them to use in the world of work
- build career plans (with goals, steps to achieve them, resources and obstacles)
- improve resume and cover letter, LinkedIn profile and other online accounts
- prepare for job interviews, pitches
- increase specific skills (self-presentations, mediating work groups)
- deal with career transitions
- propose workshops on topics in which students and alumni are experts
The help desk is active on Fridays: 11am-4pm in the Sottotetto (attic) in San Ponziano.

Events

Job Fair

Around 10% of PhDs pursue an academic career (Istat and ADI sources, 2019).
The remaining 90% look for opportunities in other fields.


"JobFair: the job meeting of Italian schools of excellence in 2022" is an initiative that aims to create a qualified meeting opportunity between leading companies, organizations and human resources with very high potential from the six Italian Higher University Schools: it is the first job meeting dedicated to the talents of the IMT School of Advanced Studies Lucca, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Scuola Normale Superiore, University Institute of Higher Studies of Pavia, International School of Advanced Studies of Trieste and Gran Sasso Science Institute of L'Aquila.
The School has been a partner since the second edition (2014).


From 2022 the six special schools organize two editions of JOBFair.


In 2023 the following editions were created:

forDoc

The IMT School has participated, since the 2017/18 Academic Year, in national Placement initiatives with the “Borsa del Placement” (meetings between companies and university representatives) and forDoc, the first national event – organized by Emblema – that is specific for PhD students and graduates, for job interview meetings with employers specifically interested in candidates with doctoral degrees.


The forDoc program includes the following initiatives:
Recruiting Days: online events where people can meet and interact with companies that tell their story, open job positions and/or launch a topic for discussion.
The events are continuously updated on https://www.borsadelplacement.it/calendario.
Virtual fair for Doc | 20 June 2024: the online career day of the Borsa del Placement puts PhD students, from all over Italy, in contact with large companies interested in their highly qualified profiles.
Coaching forDoc: a job orientation initiative, in Italian, dedicated to doctoral students and recent graduates, in the following events:

The thirs event of the cycle of workshops open to those looking for information to navigate the world of work will be held on Friday 28 June from 2 pm to 3:30 pm.

Suggestions and strategies will be provided to build effectively professionale relationships with supervisor, colleagues, and other figures in the workplace.

POSITIVE STRESS ROUTE
it is a journey over 1 month aimed at increasing well-being, identifying stress factors, transforming distress into eustress, learning coping strategies:

c) 2 final group meeting - Friday 22 March, from from 4pm to 6pm

PEER TO PEER ACTIVITIES
Experiential events organized by IMT students and Careers Service.
- Mediating Group Discussions Workshop - boost your speaking and listening: will be held on Friday 19 January 2024 in Room 1 and remotely, from 4pm to 6pm. Open to anyone who wishes to improve their skills in facilitating group discussions, this is a participatory workshop that pushes people out of their comfort zone by giving presentations and welcoming feedback in a group setting. Career Mentoring (SAA)

The Student and Alumni Association (SAA) carries out an important role with respect to the career mentoring activities, in synergy with the Careers Service and Placement of the School.

On June 7th and 8th 2019, the School held its first Annual Meeting of the Association, providing a space for idea exchange, networking and mentoring through the collaboration with the members of the Association. During these two days, students and alumni had the opportunity to meet other members of the IMT School community, present their research projects and professional experiences and explore new collaboration opportunities, cementing the objective of developing a network that actively supports placement services, reinforcing synergies and shared values.
In 2022, another Annual Meeting was held on July 1 and 2.
In 2023 it was repeated on July 7th.
In 2024, a mentoring session will be held on January 15th during the Welcome day - Rooted in Lucca, reaching beyond.

Placement - Employment outcomes

The School carries out a periodic career tracking of its alumni through social media and direct customized contacts. At the end of November 2020, the IMT School could count 343 alumni. Of these, 45% work for universities or research institutes, 28% work in the private sector and 19% work for public institutions. Approximately 41% of IMT School graduates currently work abroad.
