Activity

Experimental testing of materials and surfaces and interpretation of experimental results using the MUSAM-Lab facilities. Activities will focus both on fundamental and applied research, also in relation to the mission of technology transfer towards external companies. Moreover, a collaboration to the supervision of PhD students and a contribution to the PhD programmes of IMT might be requested

Profile

Prospective applicants should hold a doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related areas. The applicant must show from his curriculum and list of publications a capacity to carry out experimental research in the laboratory for the characterization of mechanical properties of materials and surfaces using the following equipment available in the MUSAM-Lab, such as: scanning electron microscope equipped with a tensile stage for in situ mechanical testing; confocal profilometer for surface roughness characterization; universal testing machine for strength and fracture mechanics testing of materials and structural components; thermal infra-red and electroluminescence cameras for photovoltaic modules. Experience also in modelling, simulation and statistical methods, for the interpretation of experimental results, willbe a preferential requirement

Formal requirements

Degree of doctor of philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering, or related areas, compulsory for the admission to the selection. Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.

 

Specific requirements

Experience in experimental testing in the laboratory as independent user with the following equipments: scanning electron microscope equipped with a tensile stage; confocal profilometer; universal testing machine; thermal infra-red and electroluminescence cameras. Experience also in modelling, simulation and statistical methods, for the interpretation of experimental results, will be a preferential requirement.

Procedure

A Selection Committee, appointed by the Director, assesses all applications on the basis online application info and - if provided - reference letters. Shortlisted candidates, selected on the basis of the preliminary analysis, are invited for a research presentation at IMT. Travel expenses to Lucca for the research presentation interview will not be reimbursed.

The evaluation criteria are based on: Quality of research activity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and references; Research organization experience and participation in international/national research projects and research periods in public and private institutions (academic and non-academic); Relevance of the candidate's profile for the development of IMT's research activities; Teaching, mentoring and supervision experience; Motivation; Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken; As well as any other requirements as specified in the advertisement.
