Mobility and Erasmus

Outgoing mobility for PhD students

After the first 12 months of the PhD Program, which are dedicated to coursework and seminars, IMT School students are encouraged to carry out a study, research or internship period abroad to enrich the internationality of their PhD Program further and to expand the network of their scientific contacts.

Mobility at the IMT School has the following characteristics:

Flexible

• mobility periods can begin at any time during the year
• variable duration (usually between 2 and 12 months)
• unconstrained choice of destination
• possibility to have multiple mobility periods during the PhD Program

Dedicated financial resources

• a 50% scholarship increase for mobility activities carried out abroad (for a maximum of 12 months)
• up to 500 Euros for travel expenses
• the possibility of receiving additional financing from Erasmus+/MUR funds

Insurance coverage provided by the School

• civil liability
• workplace accidents
• health insurance for destinations outside of Europe

Recognition

• Mobilities are an integral part of the students’ academic careers and are recognized within the students’ records.

Requirements

• authorization from the Scientific Board
• approval of the mobility request from the student’s advisor, who must confirm the coherence of the mobility with the student’s PhD studies

ERASMUS+

The IMT School has participated in the Erasmus Program since 2010, it was a holder of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) for the 2014-2020 period and it has been awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) for the years 2021-2027. The ECHE Charter is an important recognition that the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) awards to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It provides the general framework for the quality of the European and international cooperation initiatives that a HEI may carry out within the Program.

The general institutional strategy of the School, which aims at meeting the requirements of the Charter, is described in the Erasmus Policy Statement (EPS).

Outgoing ERASMUS+

PhD students must participate in dedicated calls to obtain an Erasmus+ Student status. Beneficiaries of Erasmus+ scholarships maintain their eligibility for the scholarship increase for mobility periods abroad between 2-12 months. 

Erasmus+ for Traineeships is the most frequent type of Erasmus funding that IMT School doctoral students receive.

Erasmus+ calls

There are two Erasmus+ outgoing mobility calls each year: in February (traineeships only) and in October (study and traineeships). 

As of October 8, 2024, the institutional call for applications for study and traineeship mobility for the 2024/25 academic year is open. The mobility period will take place between January 2025 and July 2026.

Incoming mobility and ERASMUS+ for external students

The School welcomes external students for study, research and internships on the basis of ad-hoc or Erasmus+  agreements. These students may take advantage of reduced prices for accommodation in the campus residence hall and canteen and access the common areas in the San Francesco Complex and Library in Piazza San Ponziano. They are also given a guest WiFi account that is available throughout the campus.

Incoming students who wish to participate in a course at the IMT School must fill out the online form available here.

For an incoming visit for research or internships, the External Visiting Student type B form must be filled out.
