Development of numerical algorithms for the simulation of the flow past boats moving in wavy sea state

Titolo in italiano: Sviluppo di algoritmi numerici per la simulazione del flusso intorno alla carena di imbarcazioni in navigazione in mare formato

1 Research Collaborator position
(Deadline January 17th, 2025 13:00 )
Fields

Potential Flow Theory, Boundary Element Method, Free Surface Flows

Profile

The researcher will carry out research activities in the computational fluid dynamics field, using instruments from numerical analysis, scientific computing and data science. The ideal candidate has a multidisciplinary background, with experience in fields such as physics, engineering, mathematics and mathematical modeling, numerical analysis and simulation of complex systems, computer science and knowledge/use of high performance computing platforms and graphical libraries. The candidate must also have the professional background to work in a highly multidisciplinary team such as the IMT School one.

Activity

The researcher will provide their contribution to the development of a mathematical model for the simulation of the unsteady flow past the hull of a boat moving in presence of sea waves. Thus, the model developed must be able to evaluate the impact of the surrounding wave field on the unsteady motion of the hull. The potential flow solvers will be developed making use open source software libraries. Such libraries, already under development at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, are based on Boundary Element Method (BEM) discretization.

Formal requirements

  • Master's degrees in: Mathematical Engineering, Physical Engineering, Industrial Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Energy, Nuclear, etc.), Civil Engineering or equivalent, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering Computer Science, Data Science and Scientific Computing.
