Humans build predictive models about their environment to anticipate and make sense of incoming sensory information and react accordingly. In line with this notion, the brain has been described as a "prediction machine" that tries to couple incoming sensory inputs with top-down expectations.

Brain rhythms are one of the neurophysiological mechanisms suitable for understanding the implementation of predictive processes, due to their role in shaping the perceptual outcomes and in neural information exchange. Impairments in different key aspects of oscillatory brain activity are also thought to play a crucial role in different neurodevelopmental (e.g., autism) and psychiatric (e.g., schizophrenia) disorders.

Here, by using state-of-the-art multi-method approaches I will provide novel insights into (i) the rhythmic nature of predictive processes able to shape the human conscious experience; (ii) interindividual differences modeling behavioral and neural signatures of predictive processing; (iii) how “oscillopathies”, that seem to characterize complex disorders such as autism and schizophrenia can impact on anticipatory and predictive processes.
