PROFILE 1 - Visiting Professor in “Ecological networks and biodiversity patterns”
PROFILE 2 - Visiting Professor in “Renewable energy sources at territorial level and energy communities: technical and economic aspects”

One position available for each profile.

For PROFILE 1, the ideal candidate is an internationally recognized expert in at least one of the following research areas: complexity, structure and dynamics of ecological systems; analysis of biodiversity patterns; statistical physics models of food web structure; dynamics of biological systems (univariate and multivariate); analysis of perturbations and environmental stochasticity in the context of ecological systems; relationships between ecological communities and ecosystem functions; complex ecological communities such as microbial communities. Particularly relevant is expertise in teaching and research at the intersection of model formulation and experimental validation of theory and in the formulation of testable hypotheses in the context of network theory as applied to ecological systems or, more generally, biological systems. Interest and experience in teaching in the field of quantitative ecology and the dynamics and structure of ecological systems, including applications of physical network models and stochastic models, are welcome.

For PROFILE 2, the ideal candidate is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of electrical grids related to the use of renewable sources, with expertise in data analysis and practical experience in real-world contexts. The candidate should possess a strong scientific background, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment will be highly valued.

Activity

For any profile, the successful candidate will operate within the NETWORKS unit, whose main focus is the study of the structure, dynamics and physics of networks emerging from the intricate interconnectedness of the constituents of large complex systems. The NETWORKS unit combines a theoretical approach, largely based on statistical physics, information theory, discrete mathematics and sustainability science, with a data-driven approach informed by the empirical properties of real-world complex networks, especially those naturally emerging in financial, economic, social, ecological, neural and biological systems. The position will contribute to reaching the goals of the SoBigData++ project. The Visiting Professor's activity is expected to fully integrate within the landscape of the “Complex Systems and Networks” track of the IMT PhD program in Systems Science and to expand the related teaching offer via mini-courses and seminarial activities. Engagement in research and PhD co-supervision activities is encouraged. Given the strong interdisciplinarity of the topic, the collaboration with other research units at the IMT School is also welcome.

Formal requirements

for PROFILE 1

Phd in Physics, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or similar;
the candidate must have international academic experience, an excellent scientific profile and an adequate background to work in a highly collaborative multidisciplinary environment;
an excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English is required.

MSc Degree;
