Modelling, testing and simulation of the effect of roughness on mechanical response of adhesive joints

1 Post Doctoral Fellow position
(Deadline January 2nd, 2019 12:00 )
Fields

Adhesives; Roughness; Nonlinear finite element method; Experimental testing; Confocal profilometry

Activity

The activities concern the experimental characterization of surface roughness using confocal profilometry towards modelling and simulation of its effect on the mechanical behaviour of adhesive joints between polymers (1st year of the project) or metals (2nd year of the project), using an innovative nonlinear finite element approach. The research will be mainly carried out in the MUSAM-Lab of the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, in tight cooperation with research and development divisions of Robert Bosch GmbH which are financially supporting the position. Mutual visits and participation to international conferences are expected, as well as the contribution to research and PhD education programmes at IMT Lucca

Profile

Perspective applicants must hold a PhD in mechanics, materials science, or related areas. The applicant must show from his/her curriculum and publications experience in computational mechanics. Experience in experimental testing, modelling and characterization of adhesives is beneficial, as well as a good knowledge of contact mechanics and fracture mechanics modeling. The ability to interact with researchers from academia and industry is a prerequisite.

Formal requirements

Master of science in Engineering or Materials Science; PhD in Mechanics, Materials Science or related areas. Excellent knowledge of English.

Specific requirements

Research experience on the finite element method, possibly for adhesive joints or fracture mechanics. Ability in implementing user element subroutines in finite element programmes will constitute a preferential title. Willingness to perform experiments
