Socio-economic and sustainability implications of the 15-minutes city

1 Assistant Professor position
(Deadline March 31st, 2022 12:00 )

Research Unit: AXES / NETWORKS

Fields

Sustainability, complex systems, regional science, ecological economics, urban metabolism

Activity

The research activity will investigate economic, environmental, sustainability and complexity aspects related to urban mobility and urban metabolism. The research will encompass data analysis as well as the definition of new theoretical models of the city as a complex adaptive system. The research will focus on the so-called “15 minutes city”. The project leverages the 15-minutes index, a tool based on opendata and calculated for all Italian municipalities (currently 7904). The present research proposal aims to combine the algorithmic part with a part of complex systems modelling, socio-economic and policy analysis to answer the following research questions: 1) In which urban contexts is the 15-m city a suitable model for the sustainable transformation of cities? 2) What is the impact of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan on the 15m index at the Italian level?

Profile

The successful candidate is expected to have a strong quantitative background in regional data analysis, network modeling and analysis, spatial econometric methods, complex systems tools for urban, mobility and transportation systems. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team composed of scientists and researchers from the industry. The research activity will cover the topics of urban sustainability and urban metabolism from the points of view of complexity science, economics and network theory. It will encompass both intensive data analysis and the development of new theoretical models and indicators of the city as a complex adaptive system. In-depth focus on industrial aspects related to the 15-minutes city index and its integration with the Circular City Index. The research will also consider the effects of proximal human mobility on the urban habitat, considering the EU green deal vision and the Italian PNRR plan.
